Project Re-introduction of the Summer Lady’s-tresses (Spiranthes aestivalis) in The Netherlands

Achtergrond:

In 1873 werd Spiranthes aestivalis voor het eerst in Nederland ontdekt. Tot 1936 werd de plant gevonden in vochtige oligotrofe habitats in het zuiden van het land. In totaal werden 13 locaties geïdentificeerd. S. aestivalis verdween in 1936 door ontwatering en overbemesting. Enkele van de oorspronkelijke leefgebieden zijn de afgelopen tijd sterk verbeterd door effectief natuurbeheer en worden weer geschikt geacht voor S. aestivalis. Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat S. aestivalis vanzelf terugkeert, dus herintroductie is onvermijdelijk. De dichtstbijzijnde locatie waar geschikt zaad verkregen kan worden ligt in Nomandie (Lessay).

Projectplannen

Resultaten (in januari 2022):

Eind augustus 2021 is zaad verzameld en inmiddels zijn honderden zaailingen verkregen. Symbiotisch gekweekte zaailingen zijn vanaf maart 2022 in potten uitgeplant, bij de asymbiotisch gekweekte zaailingen zal dat vanaf de herfst 2022 gaan gebeuren.

Background:

In 1873 Spiranthes aestivalis was discovered in The Netherlands for the first time. Until 1936 is was found in damp oligotrophic habitats in the Southern part of the country. In total 13 sites were identified. S. aestivalis disappeared in 1936 due to dewatering and overfertilisation. In recent times some of the original habitats have strongly been improved by effective nature management and are considered suitable again for S. aestivalis.
It is unlikely that S. aestivalis will return by itself, so re-introduction will be indispensable. The nearest locations where suitable seed could be obtained is in Nomandie (Lessay).

Results (per january 2022):

Seeds were collected at the end of August 2021 and several hundreds of seedlings have been obtained. Symbiotically grown seedlings are potted from March 2022 on , potting of asymbiotically grown seedlings will start in the autumn 2022.
